Dreaming big to end epilepsy
November is Epilepsy Awareness Month in the U.S., and Cook Children's will once again celebrate by raising awareness across the city of Fort Worth. This year's theme is "Dream Big," encouraging people to dream of a day we end epilepsy. The festivities will kick off the first weekend of November with prominent buildings across Fort Worth lit in purple – the official color of epilepsy awareness. On Nov. 8, the Jane and John Justin Institute for Mind Health will host a screening of "Under the Lights," a short film by Miles Levin about an adolescent with epilepsy. The screening will be hosted at the Fort Worth Modern Art Museum followed by a roundtable discussion with director/producer Levin and actor Greg Grunberg. The public is invited.
Throughout the month, the Cook Children's campus will feature Epilepsy Awareness banners on light poles, while a prominent "1 in 26" sign will be on display to recognize the 1 in 26 people diagnosed with epilepsy during their lifetime.
Finally, the month concludes with Neurosciences Grand Rounds presented by Ali Christy, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Christy is a child neurologist from Portland, Ore., and artist whose work is part of the neuroart collection at the Justin Institute. She will present a history of women in neurology and their impact on the field - a fitting topic for the "Dream Big" theme.
